Arches National Park - Moab, UT - Saturday

We slept in due to the late arrival the night before and woke up fresh for a day at Arches National Park.

We drove up to the entrance gate and the older lady ranger exclaimed, “Oh, wow, one of the new annual park passes! We’re not allowed to sell those yet, I thought you could only get them on the internet!” The pass is a card with a barcode that Greg purchased in West Yellowstone. It’s only $80 and you can go to any national park for an entire year. Anyway, she was so excited about it.

Arches is quite a bit smaller than Zion and Bryce but no less impressive.

The arches are made of sandstone. Water gets trapped in the cracks and as time goes on, the layers of sandstone flake off, creating arches.

We then went on the Devil’s Garden Path which was a 7 mile round trip hike. It was a very cool one because it wasn’t just walking by viewpoints but actually get into the arches and around all kinds of terrain. I felt more comfortable on this path as it was a little bit less icy (less treacherous) and I wasn’t afraid of falling and hitting my head.

At one point of the hike, we were up on a “rock fin” which is basically a ledge that was about 8 feet across, Not good for anyone afraid of heights!

From Greg and Sal's Grand Adventure 12/21/08 9:47 PM

On the way back, there was a particularly sketchy part of the trail that was part of the “primitive loop” which meant it wasn’t paved and the rocks were steep. We walked by “Wall Arch,” which had collapsed probably not that long ago.

It was freeeeeeeeeeeezing at this point. I don’t think I could feel my feet or fingers. BUT, we only one more arch to go for the day so we ran down the next trail to Broken Arch.

That evening we had dinner at the Moab Brewery and people were drinking beer! The pints were only $2 plus they were having a special so for only $3.50 you could get a pint glass WITH beer. Our glasses are sweet. The food was pretty delicious too; good old ribs and the bbq plate. YEA. The people there seemed to be regulars and many of them knew each other. They say 70% of people living in Utah are Mormon so it was almost surprising to see so many peeps at the brewery.

I know I am behind but I’m back on track! Check for more updates and of course, there are a ton more pictures. Just click the link under any of the photos!

Hey, that man's not even wearing a coat! Zion / Bryce Canyon / Moab, UT

Our last morning in Zion, how sad we were to leave! The room really did feel like home.

It was a beautiful day outside so we decided to hit one of the viewpoints from the day before so we could get a clear shot. Today's quote was provided by a very boisterous family of 5 that we ran into at Court of the Patriarchs. We had just jumped out of the car to get a few shots so Greg was just wearing a sweatshirt. I believe the family was from California and they looked like they were freezing, they were cute.

We hadn’t planned on hiking but it was too cool to pass up plus the scenic drive was closed and we’d get very limited access to what we would be able to see. It was clear, blue skies but it was bitterly cold. The wind would just cut right through ya and before we got going on the hike, I was admittedly not a happy camper. But once the blood gets flowing, it’s not so bad. It was cool to be able to hike down into the canyon.

We took a scenic byway on the way to Moab because a ranger at Zion had told us it was awesome (this is the same ranger that used the word “gnarly”). It was going to take us a bit longer but we wanted to see some gorgeous scenery.

Utah tends to get a bad rap, but I understand why the Mormons settled here. Utah has it going on (landscape wise).

A whole herd of these guys were crossing the road
From Greg and Sal's Grand Adventure 12/21/08 9:47 PM

The road got super treacherous as the sun set. There was a ton of snow drift and the roads were difficult to navigate. Greg did a great job though and we survived. Occasionally we’d see gates where they must close the road during really heavy snowfall; thank god we didn’t have to deal with that situation. My feet were even freezing IN the car. We passed a bunch of tiny towns, it was so interesting to see people living literally in the middle of a mountain or canyon.

At one junction, we drove down the wrong highway for about 4 miles because we got distracted by this:
From Greg and Sal's Grand Adventure 12/21/08 9:47 PM

It’s kind of blurry, but it’s a gas station in a mountain.

Sweet!
From Greg and Sal's Grand Adventure 12/21/08 9:47 PM

We saw this sign in the same town we ran into a Ducks fan.

We got into town late and checked into our hotel. The room smelled like poop so Greg requested another room which was given to us promptly. Two queen beds but at least this one was clean and didn’t smell like poop. This has been my least favorite hotel but at least it’s warm.
